2009 Foreign Affairs Speakers

Stephen Hadley, who was director of the National Security Council under former President George W. Bush, will be visiting campus on October 13, 2009. He will deliver a guest lecture in Professor Ingrid Wuerth's Foreign Affairs class and a lecture open to the Vanderbilt Law School community at 6 p.m. More information about the lecture by Stephen Hadley at 6 p.m. in the Renaissance Room at Vanderbilt Law School.

Nashville Committee on Foreign Relations 2009 Speaker Series

The International Legal Studies program has a close relationship with the Nashville Committee on Foreign Relations, and one student each year is selected as a fellow to attend all of the meetings gratis. Membership is open to VULS students, and scheduled speakers often address issues of particular topical importance for students. The Fall 2009 speaker series include the following:

Enemy of the State, a book coauthored by Michael A. Newton, named International Association of Penal Law's 2009 "Book of the Year." The book, coauthored with Michael Scharf, chronicles thecapture, trial and execution of Saddam Hussein. Professors Newton and Scharf served as advisors to the Iraqi High Tribunal during the establishment of Iraq's HIgh Criminal Court and throughout the trial of toppled dictator Saddam Hussein.

Updated edition of Terrorism: International Case Law Reporter, edited by Michael A. Newton, to be released in December 2009 by Oxford University Press. Students in Vanderbilt's International Legal Studies Program assisted with the initial 2007 edition and will contribute to future editions by researching terrorism cases in nations worldwide and editing headnotes for these cases. "Students who work on assembling and commenting on these cases are at the vanguard of the cutting-edge research related to ongoing judicial and institutional counterterrorism efforts," Professor Newton says. "Vanderbilt students who work on this casebook gain an in-depth understanding of the interconnected nature of modern jurisprudence related to acts of terror around the world."

Vanderbilt students assist Ugandan government in drafting & enacting war crimes legislationVanderbilt students are working with Professor Newton to assist the Ugandan government in drafting and enacting a domestic war crimes bill to address atrocities committed in the context of the two decade armed conflict with the Lord’s Resistance Army. Professor Newton delivered Vanderbilt Practice Lab analysis of several key legal issues at a conference in Uganda in February 2009. On behalf of the Public International Law and Policy Group, Professor Newton advised key members of the Ugandan judiciary and executive branch as they work to draft and enact domestic criminal statutes to address crimes against humanity, war crimes, and acts of genocide committed.

28 students to serve international & environmental externships during summer and fall 2009 - April 29, 2009 - Twenty-eight Vanderbilt law students will serve in externships and placements relating to international law during the summer and fall of 2009 as part of the International Legal Studies Program.

Society of International Law Task Force - February 3, 2009 - Michael A. Newton, professor of the practice of law in Vanderbilt's International Legal Studies Program, is a member of the American Society of International Law’s Task Force on U.S. Policy Toward the International Criminal Court (ICC), which recently issued a statement recommending that the President announce a policy of positive engagement with the Court.

TRIPS may evolve to keep pace with modern IP concerns - October 27, 2008 - The World Trade Organization Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights Agreement (TRIPS) is being “recalibrated” as developing and developed countries challenge old assumptions, according to Vanderbilt University law professor  Daniel Gervais. Gervais delivered the Fourth Annual Finnegan and Henderson Distinguished Lecture of IP at the American University Washington College of Law on 21 October. His background includes stints at the WTO and World Intellectual Property Organization.
