Semester Externships

The three externship programs listed on this page are open each year to Vanderbilt Law students, and additional externship opportunities are also available during each academic year and during the summer. International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia; The Hague, The Netherlands - 6-month internship; open to 1 or more 3L students each semester

This six-month internship with the Prosecutor's Office of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia was established by the UN Security Council to investigate and prosecute perpetrators of genocide and other war crimes arising from the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. One or more students each semester participate in a range of investigative work, factual development, and legal research on both procedural and substantive international criminal law issues. Students are also required to produce a substantial research paper as part of the internship. The internships are open to qualified third year students as well as recent graduates. A strong background in international and/or criminal law is required.

Office of the Legal Counsel, United States Embassy, The Hague -Spring semester externship; open to 1 student per year

During the spring semester, the student selected will work alongside the legal team in The Hague assisting with a wide range of legal work related to United States policy and preparation for International Court of Justice cases, the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia, the Permanent Court of Arbitration, NATO policy, and a range of other issues. Applications for the spring semester are due by July 1 of the preceding year in order to permit acquisition of a security clearance.

European Court of Justice, Luxembourg - 4- to 6-month clerkship; open to 2L and 3L students and recent graduates

These four-to-six-month clerkships with the European Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance of the European Communities are open to qualified second and third year law students and recent graduates with strong backgrounds in European or international law. A reading language of French is required for some internships, but not all. Non-U.S. citizens may apply for the internships, but only applicants with the right to return to work in the U.S. will be considered. Students may apply for these internship up to one year in advance.
