Law & Business Program
Vanderbilt’s Law & Business Program offers an innovative, intensive upper-level curriculum to students interested in a career in business law.
The program allows students to build expertise in business law, corporate management, accounting and finance by choosing among an extensive array of elective courses, including intensive transactional courses and seminars, without extending their studies beyond the normal three-year J.D. program. Law and Business students take five required core classes and then pursue an elective curriculum specifically designed to produce lawyers who understand the complexities of corporate governance, finance and accounting.
Graduates of the Law & Business Program are prepared to enter legal practice with a solid understanding of the basic principles of finance and accounting, how businesses work, the ways in which the increasingly complex regulatory environment impacts publicly traded companies, their managers and their directors, and how to work effectively with businesspeople to help them navigate laws and regulations governing business activities.
Certificate of Specialization
Graduates who fulfill the Law & Business Program’s requirements receive a certificate of specialization in Law and Business along with their J.D. degree.
What students are saying...
"The Law and Business Program has allowed me to structure my curriculum and focus on aspects of business law that will be most helpful to me in corporate practice. Having the opportunity to learn from such renowned professors and having done substantive coursework in specific areas of corporate law gave me an advantage in working on projects during summer associate work, and I know it will be after law school as well." — Lindsay Jacques, Class of 2013, Co-president, Law & Business Society
“The Law and Business Society has been a great resource for connecting the concepts we learn in the classroom with the real world. The organization sponsors frequent talks by attorneys who practice at the intersection of law and business to help give us a better picture of what we’ll be doing after law school.” — Scott Farmer, Class of 2013, Co-president, Law & Business Society, 2012 Vanderbilt Moot Court Competition Winner with teammate Adele El-Khouri
