LAW 780: Litigating the Capital Punishment Case
This course is focused on the practical aspects of litigating a capital case at the trial and the state and federal post-conviction stages. Topics will include competency to be tried, access defenses, mitigation at the sentencing phase, the relationship between guilt phase and sentencing phase defenses, jury instructions, ineffective assistance of counsel, and competency to be executed. Note: It is recommended, but not required, that students take Criminal Procedure: Adjudication and/or Investigation prior to taking this course.
