Class of 1953

Ryburn Hancock Bailey died Friday, March 30, 2007. He was born May 7, 1929, in Edgewood, Alabama and was a lifelong resident of Birmingham. A graduate of Phillips High School, he received a B.S. from Auburn University in 1950 where he was a member of Alpha Tau Omega Fraternity. A 1953 graduate of Vanderbilt Law School, he was a member of the Alabama and Birmingham Bar Associations and the Association of Life Insurance Counsel. Mr. Bailey was Vice President, Associate General Counsel and Secretary of Protective Life Insurance Company where he retired after 38 years of service. He served on the Mountain Brook Board of Zoning Adjustment for over ten years. An avid golfer and a member of the Birmingham Country Club, he enjoyed playing in the Two Bit, Rollers and Gravy Train Dogfights. He was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church. Beloved by his family and friends, he will be deeply missed. Preceding him in death were his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Bailey, Jr, and brothers William Bailey, III and Charles Woertenberg Smith Bailey. He is survived by his wife of fifty years, Louise Carter Bailey; four children, Louise Bailey Duffy (Mrs. Thomas Michael Duffy, Jr.) of Atlanta, Ryburn Hancock Bailey, Jr. (Caroline) of Birmingham, Edith Bailey Tinsley of Atlanta and Carol Bailey Whitfield (Mrs. Theodore Krouse Whitfield, Jr.) of Chattanooga; twelve grandchildren, Caroline Louise Matte, Thomas Michael Duffy, Jr., Anna Bailey Duffy, Virginia Gray Bailey, Olivia Hancock Bailey, Eleanor Harris Bailey, Dylan Raymond Tinsley, Hunter Alan Tinsley, Lucille Hancock Whit-field, Charlotte Bailey Whitfield, Mary Louise Whitfield, and Theodore Ryburn Whitfield; his brother Emlen MacDou-gal Bailey (Mary Kathryn) and many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
