Firm Giving Program

Bookmark and Share

The Firm Giving Program was created over a decade ago to promote continued excellence in legal education at Vanderbilt Law School. Firms with multiple Vanderbilt Law School alumni can participate by naming a Firm Representative to encourage and coordinate alumni donations with a goal toward achieving 100% giving participation.

This program’s growth has paralleled the increasing national influence of the law school. In the 2009 fiscal year (beginning 7/1/08 and ending 6/30/09), over 1,100 alumni working at 95 firms with locations around the world participated in the program, securing vital support for the law school. The success of this program is evident in that the giving participation rate for alumni working at participating program firms is more than twice the rate of law alumni giving overall. In fact, last fiscal year 63% of the alumni working in participating firms made a gift to the law school compared with 27% of all law alumni.

Firm participation is vital to preserving the high standards in legal education that distinguish Vanderbilt Law School from the rest of the pack. The annually published Firm Giving Honor Roll celebrates those firms who have met the challenge of 100% giving participation and recognizes their commitment to the future of the law school.

Why the Firm Giving Program?

1. Increase Alumni Giving Participation

The Firm Giving Progam seeks to raise the VULS alumni participation rate. "Participation" is the percentage of law school alumni who make a gift of any amount to VULS each year. Participation is not just a statistic. It is the primary way alumni support is measured and impacts VULS's reputation. By making a gift, alumni demonstrate the value they place on their legal education and their interest in staying connected with VULS. Our participation rate is viewed as a vote of alumni satisfaction and is often considered by corporations and foundations when directing gifts to VULS.

2. Promote your Law Firm, Corporation, or Organization.

Firms, corporations, or organizations that achieve 100% participation are listed on the VULS Firm Giving Honor Roll. They are acknowledged through publications seen by alumni, students, faculty, staff of VULS, as well as the legal community.

The Honor Roll is prominently displayed in the front lobby of the law school building and inside the Career Services suite during on-campus interviews. The Honor Roll is also published in the Lawyer magazine as well as on the VULS website. To view the most recent Honor Roll, click here.

3. Strengthen the Vanderbilt Family Network

The program is designed to build and highlight the VULS connections that we have through many firms. The Firm Giving Program helps alumni working in different firms to unite in the common cause of supporting their alma mater.
