Notice of Rescheduling

September 20, 2001

Dear SEAL members,

Earlier this week, the message below went out to all conference speakers and all conference registrants. As detailed in the message, the conference was postponed, due to travel disruptions following the unfortunate terrorist activities.

The conference will be rescheduled for a date sometime in the spring. News of the conference will follow, once a date has been selected. We are, at present, uncertain how many of the speakers and other registrants for the conference as originally scheduled will be able to make the conference as rescheduled. It is possible that there may be new openings among speakers and attendees.

To: All Conference Speakers; All Conference Registrants
Subject: Of Difficult Decisions....

Dear Friends,

J.B. Ruhl and I regret to announce that the 4th Annual SEAL Scholarship Conference must be postponed.

We greatly appreciate the willingness of so many of you to come, despite the uncertainties and delays occasioned by last week's events. However, we have carefully weighed your collected replies to my message of yesterday. And a sufficiently large number of speakers and registrants are now unable to make it to the conference that prudence suggests rescheduling. This conclusion is somewhat bolstered by our understanding that air travel between Atlanta and Tallahassee continues to be unreliable, notwithstanding the efforts of the airline industry to return the major travel routes to normal.

Although we recognize and regret that this rescheduling will cause inconvenience for many of you, we also believe the majority of you would prefer to weather such inconvenience, rather than travel distances to attend a somewhat sparsely populated conference. J.B. Ruhl and the administration at Florida State University College of Law have graciously agreed to explore alternative dates for the conference. Consequently, J.B. and I will immediately begin considering a number of Friday/Saturday possibilities in March and April. If any of you are aware of any existing conflicts during that period, please e-mail me. We will do our best to reschedule at a time that accommodates those who had registered for this week's conference.

All those whose talks were accepted will be guaranteed a spot on the Speaker's Program for the rescheduled conference. And all those who registered to attend the conference will also be guaranteed a place at the rescheduled conference.

Thank you -- all of you -- for your patience and enthusiasm.

J.B. and I wish to extend particular thanks to our Keynote Speaker, Steve Pinker, who was willing to attend the conference if it remained scheduled, despite the inconveniences that travel through Logan Airport would likely have required. We will of course be working closely with Dr. Pinker as we attempt to reschedule the conference.

With warm regards,
