Notice of October 31, 2000 |
| Dear SEAL members and
associate members,
This message brings brief news on 6 fronts: 1) the recent Scholarship Conference; 2) next year's Scholarship Conference; 3) By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation; 4) a student writing Prize in the works; 5) a call for information on your recent or forthcoming publications; and 6) a request for donations. ********************************* 1) The 3rd Annual Scholarship Conference The conference, held October 13 and 14, at the Indiana University School of Law, was another success for the Society. Jeff Stake served admirably as local host. Seventeen speakers presented. Noted evolutionary psychologist David Buss gave a very well-received Keynote Lecture, discussing patterns in both jealousy and homicide. 2) Next year’s Scholarship Conference The conference will be held at the Florida State University College of Law in Tallahassee. J.B. Ruhl and Owen Jones will co-host. Date (probably in October) to be announced. Nominations for Keynote Speaker can be sent to me. (Reminder, by tradition the Keynote Speaker is from a non-law field.) 3) By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation Society By-Laws and Articles of Incorporation (drafted through the good offices of Jeff Stake) are in the works. 4) Student Prize At the good suggestion of several conference attendees, I will begin exploring the possibility of a prize for the best student publication in a law review on evolutionary analysis in law. We would like to establish a prize of several hundred dollars, to be divided between the student and the law review on which he or she serves. The competition would be announced in a letter to the Deans and law reviews at some number of law schools. If you are interested in serving on the Student Prize Selection Committee, if you have a suggestion for the specific name of the Prize, or (even better) if you would like to make a donation to the Prize Fund, please let me know. 5) Members’ Publications Please send me citations to your recently published or forthcoming work on matters at the intersection of law and evolutionary theory. A recent review of our website traffic indicated that a large proportion of visitors examine the bibliographies at: Readings.htm If you have a work that would be appropriate for that webpage, please e-mail me with a citation (preferably in the same format as the bibliographies currently display). 6) SEAL Donations I have opened a new SEAL account. SEAL now welcomes donations. If you would like to make a contribution, of any size, please send a check made out to "Society for Evolutionary Analysis in Law" to me at the address below. Best, Owen Owen Jones P.S. -- SEAL-fact: the website received hits, over the last 9 months alone, from nearly 900 different viewers, internationally. |
