Law Students for Social Justice (LSSJ) supports the mission of the Social Justice Program at Vanderbilt Law School through student-driven programming and events related to exploring the role of law in creating, perpetuating, and eradicating hierarchies of power and privilege in our society. Created in 2008, the idea for LSSJ originated and resonated with students on the Social Justice Program's Student Advisory Board that wanted to create regular opportunities for related student-driven programming.
Some students involved with LSSJ are thinking of careers in public interest, but most LSSJ students come together from a variety of fields. Everyone is welcome to attend any of our events!
Some highlights of LSSJ Activities:
Panels & Speakers: LSSJ brings in speakers on social justice issues, often partnering with other student organizations. Last year we met with Constance Slaughter-Harvey, a civil rights activist and the first African-American woman to receive a law degree from the University of Mississippi Law School.
Faculty Teas: LSSJ also holds "Faculty Tea" afternoon events featuring a Social Justice Program faculty member discussing his or her work with groups of students.
Community Involvement: Opportunities to get involved in the local community! LSSJ is creating and maintaining community partnerships in Nashville. We work with organizations including:
· Justice for Our Neighbors of Tennessee
· TN Immigrant Refugee and Rights Coalition
· Nashville Area Habitat for Humanity
· Second Harvest Food Bank
· American Red Cross
· Ronald McDonald House of Nashville
· ….and we’re looking to partner with more!
