Submissions

The Health Law & Public Policy Forum is accepting commentary and article submissions for the 2010-2011 edition.

A commentary is an op-ed style piece that is less heavily cited and a maximum of 1500 words. An article should be a scholarly work based upon extensive research and analysis. Research papers on health related topics from classes or seminars can be submitted. The word limit for an article submission is 3000 words.

There are three relevant deadlines for submitting a commentary or article:

December 30, 2011: Brief proposal (less than one page), briefly explaining the commentary or article topic. This deadline does not apply for students submitting spring semester papers.

February 25, 2012: Brief proposal (less than one page), briefly explaining the commentary or article topic.  This deadline applies law students submitting spring semester papers and to those submitting proposals for the "Outside Perspectives" portion of the Forum.

March 20, 2012: Submission of final article.

May 25, 2012: The due date for Vanderbilt law students submitting a paper from a spring semester class and for outside submissions.

Proposals are required solely for the function of helping the Forum's editors; submitting a proposal does not guarantee publication. All publication determinations are based on the final submission.

FORMATTING RULES

All submissions must comply with the Forum’s formatting rules, which are as follows:

  1. Title: All submissions must include a title. The title must be centered at the beginning of the paper. The title must be in title case (capitalize the first letter of words in the title, but do not capitalize articles, conjunctions, or prepositions when they are four or fewer letters, unless they begin the heading or title, or immediately follow a colon).

  2. Headings: All submissions must be organized with headings. Headings must be bold and must be introduced by roman numerals. Headings must be in all capital letters of the same size.

  3. Subheadings: Subheadings should be included if needed. Subheadings must be bold and centered on the page. Subheadings must be in all capital letters, with the first capital letter being larger than the subsequent capital letters (in word, this is called ‘small caps’ under the format àfont menu).

  4. Footnotes: All submissions must be grounded in research, and footnotes with proper citations must be used as frequently as necessary indicating such research.

  5. Spacing: All submissions must be single-spaced, including between paragraphs. There must be a double space above and below any headings and sub-headings.

  6. Spacing between sentences: There must be one space between each sentence.

  7. Font: The text must be in Times New Roman 10-point font. Footnotes must be in Times New Roman 8-point font. The title must be in Times New Roman 16-point font. The author’s name must be in Times New Roman 12-point font.

  8. Margins: Use one-inch margins at the top, bottom, and both sides of the page.

  9. Indenting: Each paragraph and heading must be indented by 0.25 inches.

  10. Page justification: Text must be left-justified. The title and any subheadings must be centered.

  11. Numbering: Do not number the pages of the submission.
