The society is open to all students at the Law School, whether or not they are concentrating their efforts in transnational studies. Organized in 1966, the society is intended to foster interest in transnational legal studies, and to provide an opportunity for all students to inquire into transnational problems outside the formal classroom atmosphere.

As a member of the International Law Students Association (ILSA), which is a non-profit association of law students, the society provides various opportunities for participation at the national level in the ILSA. ILS is also a member of the National Association of Student International Law Societies (ASILS) and an affiliate of the American Society of International Law (ASIL).

ILS coordinates a speakers' program and sponsors both social activities and academic programs. There is an annual awards banquet for students participating in activites associated with international legal studies. In 2008 and 2009, ILS students organized a Pancake Eating Contest with teams of students, faculty and staff to raise funds for international charitable causes.
