Legal FraternitiesTwo national legal fraternities have chapters at the School of Law: the Horace H. Lurton Chapter of Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity International and the Thomas H. Malone Inn of Phi Delta Phi International Legal Fraternity. Phi Alpha DeltaPhi Alpha Delta sponsors various service and social activities in the Law School. At the regional and national levels, the fraternity provides the opportunity to participate in conventions and to exchange ideas with members of the participating bar and other student members. Numerous benefits, such as a life insurance program, credit cards, scholarships, and student loans, are available to members. Phi Delta Phi provides students with an opportunity to meet and interact with members of the law school community through various social events. In addition, the fraternity makes available numerous services and benefits provided by the national organization. Members of the local Inn of Phi Delta Phi may become more involved in the fraternity by participating in the national convention and other national programs. In recent years at Vanderbilt Law School, the PDP chapter organizes a Law Explorers Program in collaboration with the Boy Scouts of America. In this program local high school students who have expressed an interest in legal or government careers to come to VULS and learn more about the law. Lessons are taught on a variety of topics and with varying formats, such as learning about statutory interpretation, evidence, and legal processes and viewing films featuring to analyze oral argument effectiveness. In 2009 the semester culminated in a Mock Trial where each student had the opportunity to take on the role of an attorney and present a part of the case.
