Music and Copyright Seminar

This advanced course examines the laws that affect the creation, distribution, and consumption of music. The course will introduce you to the structure of the U.S. music industry and lawyers’ place within it, as well as a detailed examination of particular legal controversies that are relevant to the music industry today. Readings will include both primary legal authorities, such as statutes and judicial decisions, and academic commentary. Visits from guest speakers will supplement the readings. While topics vary, coverage may include: substantial similarity and music plagiarism, sampling and remixing, performing rights organizations, statutory licensing schemes, anti-piracy litigation, and contractual interpretation.
