Crossing Borders in Law and Literature

This course provides a general overview of U.S. immigration law and policy, and considers the complex dynamics of border crossing. We will examine the admission, exclusion, deportation and integration of noncitizens in the United States, and we’ll analyze the many narrative issues that emerge as migrants encounter officials from the host country. This will bring us into the realms of self-representation, translation, narrative analysis, and the challenges of representing ourselves in language with reference to both legal and literary examples.
