This course explores the role of the lawyer as a public citizen with “special responsibility for the quality of justice” as well as the theory, practice, and ethics of contemporary public interest lawyering. Students will examine the ethical rules governing the profession with an emphasis on issues of particular relevance to public sector attorneys and on the public service commitments that undergird the profession. Students will also consider the relationships between public interest attorneys and the clients, constituencies, and causes they serve, as well as the range of institutional settings from which public interest lawyering is pursued.
