This course will cover various legal issues involving the professional, international, and amateur sports industries. The course will focus on the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), National Football League (NFL), the National Basketball League (NBA), the Women National Basketball League (WNBA), Major League Baseball (MLB) and the National Hockey League (NHL), as well as professional soccer (in the United States and abroad), and other sport entities. Special attention will be paid to the history of each as well as how labor law, antitrust law, contract law, tort law, intellectual property law, gaming law and other aspects of law influence, shape and regulate professional, international, and amateur sports. The course will also look at the Olympic movement and how disputes are handled and the legal rules covering the Olympic Games and other forms of international sports associated with the Olympic movement. Finally, the issues of concussions and other injuries as well as the interaction between sports and society will be explored. Enrollment limited.
