Course Information


This course will provide a comprehensive examination of criminal sentencing in the US. It will include discussion of different sentencing systems (including the federal guidelines), mandatory minimum sentences and three strikes laws, the death penalty, sentencing procedures, risk assessment, parole, community alternatives to prison, restorative justice, and how the plea bargaining process interacts with sentencing. The goal is to give students a good sense of why and how we punish.

Prerequisite: Criminal Law.
