Copyright Law

Copyright is the form of intellectual property that covers expressive works such as literature, film, music, artwork, and software.  This course will introduce you to the fundamentals of U.S. copyright law and theory.  It surveys copyrightable subject matter; the process for acquiring copyright protection; the scope and duration of the rights that a copyright owner enjoys; defenses to infringement, including fair use; and the remedies available once infringement is established.  We will devote particular attention to whether any reform is necessary in light of new technologies that challenge existing industries and business models.
