Jon Victor ‘27 has been selected as a Cheek Scholar for the Class of 2028. The honor was announced by Amanda Rose, Cornelius Vanderbilt Chair in Law.
The Cheek Business Law Scholarship provides supplemental scholarship funds for a student completing the Certificate in Law & Business. The scholarship, endowed by James H. Cheek III, J.D. ’67, is awarded each spring to a member of the current 1L class. Cheek Scholars receive a supplemental annual scholarship for their second and third years of law school.
“We are delighted to award this honor to Jon Victor,” said Rose. “Jon is an excellent student who brings a unique perspective to business law, having covered the field as a reporter before law school. We are excited to see where his career takes him.”
After earning a bachelor’s degree from Yale, Victor embarked on a career in business journalism that took him to New York, Montreal, and San Francisco. Through his research and reporting on influential companies like Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, he developed a fascination with the relationship between corporate decision-making and legal principles. “I wanted to use my legal education to gain a deep understanding of how markets, investors and businesses operate at a fundamental level,” he explained.
The Certificate in Law & Business has provided Victor the opportunity to build that knowledge, offering him broad exposure to core areas of business law, as well as finance and accounting. He’s also taken advantage of Vanderbilt’s lunch talks and presentations and looks forward to participating in the Law & Business Seminar Speaker Series next year.
Victor will spend his summer in Boston at Ropes & Gray. In his 2L year, he hopes to join a journal and dive deeper into an area of corporate law through writing a student note. He is a member of the Tech Law Society.
“It’s a tremendous honor to be recognized as a Cheek Scholar,” said Victor. “I’m grateful to the Law & Business faculty for their support and inspired by Mr. Cheek’s generosity in establishing this opportunity for students.”
