Michael Newton Delivers Keynote Lecture on Litigating Genocides at Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti

Professor Michael Newton delivered the keynote lecture at “Litigating Genocides,” held at the Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti in Venice on May 18, 2026. He discussed his role in hearings at the International Court of Justice, including Gambia v. Myanmar, drawing lessons that practitioners can apply in future litigation.

mike newtonThe event was promoted by Vanderbilt Law, in collaboration with Ca’ Foscari University of Venice (Department of Philosophy and Cultural Heritage and Center for Legal Studies); the Veneto Institute of Sciences, Letters and Arts; and the Feliciano Benvenuti Foundation. It was sponsored by the Global Campus of Human Rights and supported by the Center for Human Rights Studies and the Chamber of International Lawyers.

Newton is the Director of the International Legal Studies Program, Vanderbilt-in-Venice Program, and the International Law Practice Lab at Vanderbilt Law.
