94 Vanderbilt Law students serve summer internships for credit

Ninety-four Vanderbilt Law students are serving internships for which they will receive course credit during summer 2010. Vanderbilt law students are serving internships with the Fifth, Sixth and Ninth Circuit Courts of Appeals, with U.S. District Courts in the District of Columbia, Idaho, Kansas, Kentucky, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Texas; with U.S. Attorneys offices in Alaska, California, Georgia, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Virginia; in state and city attorneys’ offices; with the U.S. Navy JAG Corps, and in a variety of agency, corporate, non-profit and other settings.

"Externships offer an excellent opportunity for students to contextualize the doctrine and procedure that they have learned in law school,” said Sue Kay, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, who directs Vanderbilt’s externship program. “Students return with a better understanding of the way the legal system works and the type of work they want to do. In addition, they enhance each others’ education by bringing their new perspectives to bear in the classroom. ”

“Externships, which require supervision from both a faculty member and a practitioner, offer students incomparable exposure to the practice of law as well as meaningful mentoring from both faculty and practicing lawyers and judges," said Dean Chris Guthrie. "I am grateful to Associate Dean Kay for her leadership, to the faculty members who are serving as supervisors, and to the many practicing lawyers and sitting judges who have taken our students under their wings.”
