WLSA Women’s History Month Events Feature DOJ Human Rights Lawyer Courtney Urschel ’01, Women Sports Lawyers, and a First-Gen Lawyer

The Women Law Students Association is sponsoring career-oriented talks throughout March as part of Women’s History Month.

  • Women in Sports Law—Monday, March 6, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Flynn Auditorium. Jessica Evans, general counsel of lacrosse operations for the Premier Lacrosse League; Valerie Williams, associate general counsel for the Tennessee Titans; and Rachel Libman, chief legal officer of the Miami Heat, will discuss their work and career paths in a Zoom panel discussion co-sponsored with the Entertainment and Sports Law Society.
  • A Conversation with a First-Generation Woman Lawyer—Thursday, March 9, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Hyatt Room. First-generation lawyer Kris Reliford is a partner at Bradley, where her litigation practice focuses on non-compete litigation, securities and government investigations, and complex business disputes. Reliford will share her experiences as a first-generation law student and legal professional. She earned her law degree at Fordham University in 2010. This talk is co-sponsored by Opening Statement.
  • A Conversation with Courtney Urschel ‘01, Deputy Chief of the Human Rights and Special Prosecutions Section of the Department of Justice—Friday, March 24, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Renaissance Room. Urschel started her career as an associate at Simpson Thacher in New York and clerked for then-Chief Judge Thomas Francis Hogan of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia from 2003 to 2005. She then joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office, where she prosecuted terrorism, counterespionage and international violent crime cases. She also served as deputy director of the division of investigations at the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission before joining the Department of Justice’s Human Rights and Special Prosecutions section. Urschel’s talk is co-sponsored by the International Law Society.

Students may also attend informal coffee chats, where they can ask questions about navigating job interviews, choosing upper-level courses, and charting a successful career path. These are scheduled in Student Lounge 2 on Friday, March 10; Thursday, March 23; and Wednesday, March 29. All chats are from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
