How to Apply to Vanderbilt Law School

To apply for admission to the J.D. program, take the following steps:

Step 1: Have (or expect to have) a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before the fall semester for which you are applying to enter the Vanderbilt J.D. program.
Step 2: Register with the J.D. Credential Assembly Service (CAS) through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). The CAS report sent to law schools will include photocopies of your transcripts, a transcript analysis, letters of recommendation, and other information helpful to readers of your application. You will need your registration ("L number") to complete your application.
Step 3: Take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC).
- If you have not taken and do not intend to take the LSAT, then you may complete the JD-Next eight-week online law school prep course and entrance exam. Please designate Vanderbilt Law as a recipient of your JD-Next exam scores so we may reference them when reviewing your application in lieu of the LSAT.

Application Dates and Deadlines

At Vanderbilt, we offer various admissions pathways to accommodate our students' needs and goals: the Binding Early Decision and the Regular Decision.

The Binding Early Decision route suits applicants who have decided that Vanderbilt University Law School is their first choice and want to expedite the application process. They must submit their application and a signed Binding Early Decision Agreement by November 1. In return, they will receive their admission decision by December. If accepted, they are formally committed to attending Vanderbilt the following fall semester.

Through Regular Decision, applicants have until April 1 to submit their application and supplemental materials. Our J.D. Admissions Committee reviews each submission holistically, so decision times vary from case to case.

The application window for transfer students opens on February 15. The deadline for Priority Early Action applications is April 15, Early Action is May 1, and the deadline for Regular Decision applicants is July 1.

Application Requirements for J.D. Program

Two Letters of Recommendation

Applicants must submit at least two letters of recommendation through LSAC's Credential Assembly Service. The letters should be from faculty members of their undergraduate or graduate school, preferably those who advised them on research projects or taught them in more than one course.
Applicants who have recently been employed full-time or serving in the military may submit letters from employers and other individuals who are best able to comment on their performance.
Required Statements

All applicants must submit two statements, each limited to two pages and submitted as attachments to the application form. However, you may provide additional optional statements.
Personal Statement: Please present yourself as a prospective law student by writing a personal statement. You may write about any topic that you feel will help our Admissions Committee better understand you as a person and as a prospective law student.
In your personal statement, you can discuss your motivations to pursue law, your personal and professional goals and interests, or your thoughts on engaging the intellectual, experiential, and professional resources and opportunities that law school and the legal profession offer.
Lived Experience Statement: The quality and vibrancy of the educational environment at Vanderbilt Law arise from enrolling a student body with a broad mix of individual backgrounds, experiences, skills, knowledge, and interests. Please tell us about any aspects of your background and experiences that you believe would contribute to the educational environment.

Character and Fitness

In addition to a bar examination, there are character, fitness, and other qualifications required for admission to the bar in every U.S. jurisdiction. We encourage students to review the character requirements for any jurisdiction in which they intend to seek admission by contacting the jurisdiction. Addresses for all relevant agencies are available through the National Conference of Bar Examiners (NCBE).
With an eye toward these professional standards, the Vanderbilt application for admission asks specific questions concerning disciplinary actions in an academic setting, charges or convictions of crimes, and charges or findings of offenses (whether or not defined as crimes).
Please note: Bar examiners may review your answers to these questions on your law school application when you apply for admission to the bar and your background records are checked.

Application Fee

Along with the online application and required documents, applicants must pay a non-refundable $70 application fee with a credit or debit card.
For those who have received a need-based fee waiver through LSAC or a Vanderbilt Law School fee waiver, the Vanderbilt application fee will be automatically waived when applied.
Language Scores (International Students)

International students applying to Vanderbilt’s J.D. program must meet the English language requirement.
If you are an international applicant and have completed a bachelor's degree at an institution outside the United States (including its territories) and/or Canada, you must also take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the Duolingo English Test. However, if the language of instruction at the foreign institution conferring your bachelor's degree is English, then you may be exempt from this requirement.
The Duolingo English Test is an online English proficiency test that can be taken on demand in under an hour. It is taken via a computer with a camera and includes a proficiency score, video interview, and writing sample, which are shared with Vanderbilt when you send your results. Certified results are available within 48 hours of the test session.
Please request that ETS send your TOEFL score directly to LSAC using code 0058 for inclusion with your CAS report.
Admission Interview - Optional
We would like to know you better and for you to learn more about becoming a Vanderbilt law student. We offer admission interviews with Vanderbilt Law alumni nationwide and in a variety of international locations.
To request an interview, please:
- Complete the admission interview section of the application for admission.
- Submit your application by 11:59 PM on November 15, 2025.
Application for Law Scholars Merit Awards - Optional

Upon acceptance into our J.D. degree program, Vanderbilt automatically considers students for merit scholarships provided by the law school.
For consideration for all available Law Scholar Awards, the Application for Law Scholars Merit Awards must be submitted within the Vanderbilt Law Application Status Portal by January 10. Please note that January 10 is a soft deadline with a seven- to 10-day grace period. If chosen by our selection committee, you will be notified in February.

Transfer Students

We have streamlined the transfer application process for students who have completed their first year at an ABA-accredited school and want to complete their second and third years with us, so they can seamlessly transition into life at Vanderbilt.

Applying to Dual Degree Programs

Those interested in pursuing a dual degree at Vanderbilt Law School must apply to and be admitted to each school separately. Additionally, each graduate school separately awards and administers your financial aid.

However, for students who plan to apply to the Ph.D. in Law & Economics program, there is a unified admission process. Additionally, if accepted, they receive full fellowship support covering full tuition and stipend for both degrees.

J.D. Application Fee Waiver Requests

At Vanderbilt University, we work to support accessible education and help lessen the cost of applying to law school.

Candidate Referral Service Fee Waivers

The LSAC’s Candidate Referral Service (CRS) is a free service that can help students connect with law schools that they may not have previously considered based on their GPA, LSAT score, or geographical location.
If you participate in CRS, your information may become available to us. We will notify you by email if the LSAC CRS fee waiver has been granted, and your electronic application fee will be waived automatically when you apply to Vanderbilt University Law School.
If you would like to be considered for a merit-based fee waiver but are not participating in CRS, please send your LSAC Account number, Academic Summary Report ,and LSAT Score status page to admissions@law.vanderbilt.edu.
Need-Based Fee Waivers

Need-based fee waivers granted by the Law School Admission Council (LSAC) result in Vanderbilt automatically approving an electronic application fee waiver.
When requesting a need-based fee waiver directly to Vanderbilt, please provide your LSAC account number and a letter explaining your financial situation, including documentation to demonstrate your need. Documentation may be current financial aid award notices from your educational institution or income tax records.
Service-Based Fee Waivers

Service-based fee waiver requests should be forwarded to the Admissions Office at admissions@law.vanderbilt.edu. Please include your LSAC account number and proof of service participation.
Event-Based Fee Waiver
Vanderbilt Law Admissions offers fee waivers for prospective students who attend certain events during the admissions cycle.
- Prospective students who check-in with our representative at the Vanderbilt Law table at in-person LSAC forums and have not already applied to Vanderbilt will have their Vanderbilt application fees waived for the 2025-2026 admission cycle.
- Prospective students who check-in with our representative at the table at in-person or virtual law school fairs and have not already applied to Vanderbilt will have their Vanderbilt application fees waived for the 2025-2026 admission cycle.
- Prospective students who attend a Virtual Vanderbilt Law JD Information Session and have not already applied to Vanderbilt will have their Vanderbilt application fees waived for the 2025-2026 admission cycle.

We evaluate each application thoroughly and holistically, reflecting our belief that the quality of the educational environment at Vanderbilt Law School benefits from considering a range of information far broader than your GPA and LSAT score.

We use a rolling selection process in which we consider applications roughly in the order received. Note that, while we make decisions on individual applications as quickly as possible, the time required varies from case to case, which ensures that each application receives the individual attention it deserves and allows us to make careful comparisons of applications received at different times.

Manage your Application

You may view the status of your application online using your Applicant Status Portal, which will allow you to confirm your status in real-time. After you submit your application through LSAC, you will receive an "Application Received" email from Vanderbilt. The confirmation email will provide you with a username and PIN for creating your account for our Applicant Status Portal, where you may view your application status and upload additional materials for your application. We will notify you by email when we post a decision on your application to your portal.
