82 Vanderbilt Law students receive stipends to support summer internships

Eighty-two Vanderbilt Law students are serving in public interest, government or non-profit internships with financial support from one of four different stipend programs during summer 2010. The stipend programs include the Public Interest Stipend Fund, funded by the Vanderbilt Legal Aid Society, and Vanderbilt Law School Stipends, funded by the law school, as well as individual regulatory and environmental stipends, funded by Vanderbilt’s academic programs in those areas. Through all programs combined, students received a total of $278,550 of stipend support for summer internships, the highest total amount ever awarded.

“We awarded more summer stipends than ever before,” said Sue Kay, Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs, who directs Vanderbilt’s externship and summer stipend programs. “To apply for a stipend award, students have to secure an internship at a qualifying organization, and Vanderbilt students garnered excellent placements working in a variety of different settings. The rich experiences they gain from internships in a variety of courts, law offices, government agencies and advocacy organizations will add a valuable perspective to their legal studies when they return.”

“Internships are an excellent way for students to gain real-world experience," said Dean Chris Guthrie. "The Legal Aid Society provides a valuable benefit to students and the organizations they serve by funding many of these stipends, and the law school has increased the number of stipends we fund because of the tremendous benefit our students and the organizations they serve gain from their work.”
