Wade Turner, Class of 1997, who is executive vice president and general counsel of Academy Sports Outdoors in Katy, Texas, was recently profiled in Texas Lawyer about his position as head of Academy’s legal department.
Turner joined Academy Sports as its general counsel in 2009. His department is in charge of ensuring that Academy’s 137 stores comply with federal, state and local regulations. He also supervises his company’s risk management, loss prevention, customer service complaints and employment issues, and oversees contract negotiations with vendors, intellectual property protection, and management of outside counsel.
Before joining Academy, Turner worked with Locke Lord Bissell and Liddell in Houston and then in the legal department of Home Depot, where he was senior corporate counsel for litigation.
In addition to his law degree, Turner holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Dayton and a master’s degree in business administration from Ohio State University in 1992, which he earned while working as manager of regulatory and pricing services at the energy company DPL Inc.
