How to Apply to Vanderbilt Law School
To apply for admission to the J.D. program, take the following steps:
- Step 1: Have (or expect to have) a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university before the fall semester for which you are applying to enter the Vanderbilt J.D. program.
- Step 2: Register with the J.D. Credential Assembly Service (CAS) through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). The CAS report sent to law schools will include photocopies of your transcripts, a transcript analysis, letters of recommendation, and other information helpful to readers of your application. You will need your registration ("L number") to complete your application.
- Step 3: Take the Law School Admission Test (LSAT) through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC).
- If you have not taken and do not intend to take the LSAT, then you may complete the JD-Next eight-week online law school prep course and entrance exam. Please designate Vanderbilt Law as a recipient of your JD-Next exam scores so we may reference them when reviewing your application in lieu of the LSAT.
- Step 4: Submit the online Vanderbilt Law School application through LSAC.

Application Dates and Deadlines
At Vanderbilt, we offer various admissions pathways to accommodate our students' needs and goals: the Binding Early Decision and the Regular Decision.
The Binding Early Decision route suits applicants who have decided that Vanderbilt University Law School is their first choice and want to expedite the application process. They must submit their application and a signed Binding Early Decision Agreement by November 1. In return, they will receive their admission decision by December. If accepted, they are formally committed to attending Vanderbilt the following fall semester.
Through Regular Decision, applicants have until April 1 to submit their application and supplemental materials. Our J.D. Admissions Committee reviews each submission holistically, so decision times vary from case to case.
The application window for transfer students opens on February 15. The deadline for Early Action applications is April 15 and the deadline for Regular Decision applicants is June 15.

Admissions Policy
At Vanderbilt Law School, our individualized review of each application ultimately seeks to answer two fundamental questions:
1) Is the applicant prepared to succeed in the rigorous study of law?
2) Will the applicant thrive in, contribute to, and learn from the Vanderbilt Law community, developing skills in leadership and service consistent with the legacy of Vanderbilt Law School and the hallmarks of the legal profession.
In answering the first question, we consider factors that demonstrate the applicant’s readiness for legal education: academic preparation; academic achievement (GPA trend); test performance (on the LSAT or JD-Next), and intellectual ability (reflected in application essays and observations shared in letters of recommendation).
In answering the second question, we consider the applicant’s career and academic interests; professional and personal accomplishments; and evidence of leadership, collaboration, integrity, and commitment to service.
Students attracted to Vanderbilt Law present a breadth of educational backgrounds, experiences, and accomplishments. No single factor determines an admissions decision. Each review is a comprehensive assessment of an applicant’s qualifications. Each application is considered in its entirety to understand the character and skills which resulted in that applicant’s shared achievements and demonstrates their future academic and professional potential.
Our review process has produced incoming classes that thrive and enjoy success but take different paths to Vanderbilt. For example, the 179 students in the Vanderbilt J.D. Class of 2029, for example, come from 34 states and the District of Columbia. They range in age from 21 to 41, with 26% just having completed their bachelor’s degrees. Ten percent hold advanced degrees (master’s/doctorate).
We make decisions on individual applications on a timely basis, but the time required for each final decision can vary. Our rolling admissions process allows us to extend the period of review when appropriate (perhaps to request clarification or additional information), ensuring that each application receives the individual attention it deserves. It also allows us to make informed comparisons among applications completed at different points in the admissions cycle (sometimes owing to an applicant’s test date or availability of fall term grades).
Transfer Students
We have streamlined the transfer application process for students who have completed their first year at an ABA-accredited school and want to complete their second and third years with us, so they can seamlessly transition into life at Vanderbilt.
Applying to Dual-Degree Programs
Those interested in pursuing a dual degree at Vanderbilt Law School must apply to and be admitted to each school separately. Additionally, each graduate school separately awards and administers your financial aid.

A Holistic Review Process
We evaluate each application thoroughly and holistically, reflecting our belief that the quality of the educational environment at Vanderbilt Law School benefits from considering a range of information far broader than your GPA and LSAT score.
We use a rolling selection process in which we consider applications roughly in the order received. Note that, while we make decisions on individual applications as quickly as possible, the time required varies from case to case, which ensures that each application receives the individual attention it deserves and allows us to make careful comparisons of applications received at different times.
