Clinic Spotlight: Angela Karas ’24 and Madeline Knight ’24

Angela and Madeline were named co-recipients of the Carl J. Ruskowski Clinical Legal Education Award, which recognizes the students who, in their representation of clients in the law school’s clinical program, demonstrated excellence in the practice of law and best exemplified the highest standards of the legal profession. Madeline and Angela’s exceptional work on three amicus briefs — Singleton, McBreairty, and Diei — merited this accolade.

Each amicus brief required delving into distinct First Amendment issues, careful research, thoughtful drafting, and thorough review and editing, in addition to reaching out to a range of amici partners.

“The Stanton Foundation has been an integral element characterizing my law school experience,” said Angela. “The First Amendment Clinic in particular was an incredible learning opportunity as it concretized many aspects of First Amendment law I’d learned about in my previous classes, allowing me to take that knowledge in support of real people and real clients. Throughout my semester of the clinic, my clinic partner and I authored three appellate amicus briefs on topics ranging from panhandling statutes to free speech in the professional school context. This was an incredible opportunity that not only taught me more about intricacies of First Amendment doctrine but also more about myself.”
