Barry Vickrey ’77 (BA’71) has retired from the law faculty at the University of South Dakota.
Vickrey served as dean of USD Law from 1993 to 2011 and since then has taught Property Law and upper-level courses on mediation, legislation and the legal profession. He also supervised the South Dakota drafting and legal practice course, which he had helped create.
Vickrey was named dean of USD Law in 1993 after teaching for 11 years at the University of North School of Law in Grand Forks.
Before joining the law faculty of the University of North Dakota, Vickrey was director of the Division of Professional Education at the American Bar Association and was a staff aide in the Policy Planning Office of the governor of Tennessee.
Over the course of his career, Vickrey has held numerous positions in state and national professional associations, including nine years of service as a member of the ABA’s Standing Committee on Lawyer Competence. He is active in the ABA’s Section of Legal Education and Admissions to the Bar, for which he regularly chairs accreditation inspections at other law schools, and has served as chair of the section’s Questionnaire Committee, which develops the questionnaires submitted by law schools as part of the accreditation process.
Vickrey has been married since 1971 to Mary Green Vickrey. They have two sons and two grandchildren.
