Biography

Judge Vince Chhabria has served as a federal district judge for the Northern District of California since 2014. Before his nomination to the federal bench by President Barack Obama, Judge Chhabria served for 10 years as a deputy city attorney for government litigation in San Francisco’s city legal department, where he was co-chief of appellate litigation from 2011 to 2014. After earning his law degree at the University of California at Berkeley, Judge Chhabria was a law clerk for Judge Charles R. Breyer on the Northern District of California in 1998-99 and 2001-02; for Justice Stephen G. Breyer of the U.S. Supreme Court in 2002-02; and for Judge James R. Browning of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit in 1999-2000. He worked on the staff of U.S. Rep. Lynn C. Woolsey from 1992 to 1995 and practiced law with Covington & Burling in San Francisco from 2002 to 2004 before joining the city’s legal department.
