The Vanderbilt AI Legal Lab (VAILL) announced that David Shin ’03 will serve as a Visiting Scholar and Advisor in the coming academic year.
His addition reflects an ongoing and expanded focus on AI governance within VAILL.
“David has deep experience in guiding AI and technology strategy for some of America’s largest and most innovative corporations,” said Mark Williams, VAILL Founding Co-Director and Professor of the Practice of Law at Vanderbilt Law School. “His breadth and depth of knowledge in this space, developed over an impressive legal career, will be a huge benefit to VAILL and Vanderbilt Law students in the coming year.”
“Alongside Mark and Cat Moon, (Founding Co-Director of VAILL and Professor of the Practice of Law), the goal is to equip the next generation of legal and compliance professionals with the skills to navigate this evolving AI risk landscape,” said David. “I hope to make a positive impact by participating in key discussions and panels, shaping law school curriculum, and developing career pathways.”
David is Vice President of Legal – Technology Transformation & Innovation at HCA Healthcare, where he supports HCA’s transformation of patient care and operations through AI. He also serves as Co-Chair of HCA’s Responsible AI Steering Committee, advising on AI trust, safety, and governance matters. Prior to HCA, David served as Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of venture-backed companies, including the AI / ML AdTech unicorn startup Moloco. He also served as Chief Counsel of Software, Cloud and AI and Chief Privacy Officer at Varian, an oncology medical device and software company since acquired by Siemens in 2021. David began his legal career in private practice focusing on M&A, corporate and securities at DLA Piper and Mayer Brown.
David earned his J.D. from Vanderbilt University Law School, and B.A. in Politics from Occidental College. He serves as Co-Chair of the Data Privacy and Security Committee for the National Asian Pacific American Bar Association.
