Henry A. Callaway III ’83 has been appointed to 14-year term on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Alabama in Mobile.
Callaway has practiced business litigation and bankruptcy law with Hand Arendall in Mobile since 1983. His appointment to a seat on the federal bankruptcy court will begin in May. He takes the seat vacated by Judge Margaret Mahoney, who is stepping down at the end of April.
Callaway earned his undergraduate degree at Harvard University in 1980 before earning his J.D. at Vanderbilt Law School in 1983.
Callaway served as president of the Mobile Bar Association in 2011 and has been a state bar commissioner since 2008. He has been a leader in the South Alabama Volunteer Lawyers Program for 25 years, having served several terms as its president.
In 2011, Callaway received the American Bar Association’s Pro Bono Publico Award, the ABA’s most prestigious award for public service. The award recognized his innovative work at both the local and state levels to increase access to justice in Alabama. He currently chairs the Alabama Access to Justice Commission.
He is also the long-time scoutmaster of a special needs Boy Scout troop. He and his wife, Emily Clark Callaway, have two sons.
