Dean Chris Guthrie has announced the appointment of Timothy Meyer as a professor of law at Vanderbilt Law School.
Meyer, whose scholarly work focuses on international lawmaking and compliance, previously taught at the University of Georgia School of Law. His current research examines the interaction of international and local rules on energy subsidies, the role of science in international lawmaking, the relationship between international energy institutions and climate change institutions, the codification of customary international law and the creation of non-binding “soft law” obligations.
Professor Meyer’s articles have been published in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review, the California Law Review, the Journal of Legal Analysis and the Harvard International Law Journal, among others. He is also the author of a book on international soft law (with Andrew Guzman), forthcoming from Oxford University Press. He has testified before the U.S. Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and has served as a consultant and expert on international law issues in litigation in U.S. courts.
“Tim Meyer is an emerging leader in the field of international law, with expertise in international business, public international law, energy and trade,” Dean Guthrie said. “He will enrich several of our academic programs, and as a teacher and mentor, he will play a vital role for students entering today’s global legal workforce.”
Meyer joined the faculty of UGA Law after practicing law in the U.S. State Department’s Office of the Legal Adviser, where he represented the United States in commercial arbitrations and real property transactions all over the world as well as in negotiations with foreign governments on diplomatic law issues. Before joining the State Department’s legal staff, he was a law clerk for Judge Neil M. Gorsuch of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit.
Meyer earned his B.A. and M.A. in history from Stanford University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and his J.D. and Ph.D. in jurisprudence and social policy from the University of California, Berkeley, where he graduated at the top of his law class. While at Berkeley, he held a Public Policy and Nuclear Threats Fellowship from the University of California Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation.
At Vanderbilt, Professor Meyer will teach International Business Law and International Trade Law. He is affiliated with Vanderbilt’s Law and Business, International Legal Studies, Law and Government, and Energy, Environment and Land Use academic programs.
