Dual Degree: J.D./M.D.

Combine the study of law and the study of medicine with the Vanderbilt J.D./M.D.

Overview

A prospective Vanderbilt J.D./M.D. dual-degree student must complete and submit:

  1. an application for admission to the law school’s J.D. program, and
  2. a separate application for admission to the medical school’s M.D. program.

While applicants should indicate their interest in the J.D./M.D. dual degree in both applications for the schools’ awareness, the schools independently decide on admission to their programs in the context of their own applicant pools and admission processes.

We recommend applying to both programs in the same annual admission cycle. If admitted to both schools, dual-degree students would preferably start in the M.D. program and complete two years of medical school, then complete two years of law school, followed by one year of alternate semester enrollment (one semester at the medical school and one semester at the law school).

Alternatively, students enrolled in the Vanderbilt M.D. program can apply for admission to the J.D. program during year 1 or year 2 of the M.D. program and, if admitted, complete the next two years at the law school, followed by one year of alternate semester enrollment. Conversely, enrolled Vanderbilt J.D. students can apply to the M.D. program during year 1 or year 2 at the law school and, if admitted, complete the next two years at the medical school, followed by one year of alternate semester enrollment.
