Michael Newton elected to the American Society of International Law Executive Council

Michael A. Newton, Professor of the Practice of Law, was elected to serve a three-year term on the American Society of International Law (ASIL) Executive Council beginning March 2011.

ASIL is a non-profit organization whose members include more than 4,000 judges, attorneys, professors, corporate counsel, organizational representatives and national and international civil servants from nearly 100 nations. The organization’s mission is to engage a worldwide network of people interested in international law, promote research and public awareness in the field, and foster international relations based on law and justice.

The Executive Council to which Professor Newton was elected is the chief governing body of the ASIL and oversees its general interests, including adoption of regulations, appropriation of funds, issuance of publications and formation of committees.

“It is an honor to be elected to serve the society,” said Newton, whose affiliation with ASIL began as a law student. “The American Society of International Law enjoys a rich tradition of expertise in expanding the intellectual foundations of international law, but also for making its principles more accessible and understandable to practitioners, governmental bodies, and students from around the world.”

At Vanderbilt, Professor Newton teaches courses related to international law, international criminal law and national security issues; develops international externship placement opportunities for students, and directs the Vanderbilt in Venice summer study program.
