Sydney Suthar is a third-year student with an interest in ensuring equity through benefits programs such as SNAP, WIC, and SSI. Sydney joined the program in 2024 after graduating from the University of Texas at Austin, where she presented her Honors Thesis entitled Money, Money, Money: Representation in Campaign Financing. As an undergraduate, she served as a teaching assistant for Environmental Economics, Economics Statistics, and Econometrics courses. As a third-year student, Sydney is excited to develop her research interests and focus on creating publish-worthy scholarship, especially as an editorial staff member on the Social Justice Reporter and Journal of Entertainment and Technology.

Work Experience:

• Legal Intern (May 2026–July 2026) for The Legal Aid Society of Middle Tennessee and the Cumberlands
  As a legal intern, I coordinated and executed free Powers of Attorney and Advanced Directive Clinics, as well as “Benefits in a Box” Clinics, which screened low-income individuals for eligibility for federal and state benefits, while supervised by a licensed attorney. I additionally analyzed discovery documents, researched novel policy changes, and wrote client letters while supervised by a licensed attorney.
• Research Assistant (June 2025–August 2025) for Professor Jennifer Shinall
  I worked with Professor Shinall on research investigating how medical professionals’ decision making has been altered by the decision made in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.

Pro Bono Work:

  I volunteered at West Tennessee Legal Services’ Expungement Clinics and Power of Attorney and Will Clinics while supervised by a licensed attorney.
• If/When/How’s Reproductive Rights Legal Research Clinic
  I volunteered for Tennessee Freedom Circle by researching the current state of law regarding medical abortions across several states while supervised by a licensed attorney.
