Polarization has been a barrier to government climate mitigation and adaptation even as our planet warms, resources diminish, and habitats suffer. The Private Climate Governance (PCG) Lab approaches climate change with a new perspective by accounting for private governance as well as public governance. By engaging the private sector in climate initiatives and understanding private sector motivations and options, the Lab is helping to bridge the gap between needs and reality.

Bypassing Polarization with Governor Phil Bredesen

As debates over energy and environmental policy grow increasingly polarized, Governor Bredesen explores how leaders can bridge divides and find pragmatic, durable solutions that balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. Drawing on his experience in both the public and private sectors, he discussed the role of collaboration, innovation, and bipartisanship in shaping an effective energy future.

Publications & Primers

Private Environmental Governance

Private Climate Governance (PCG) arose from private sector actions that emerged to address climate change mitigation and adaptation in the absence of major federal climate change legislation over the past three decades. PCG occurs when these organizations perform the climate mitigation and adaptation functions typically assigned to governments, such as reducing carbon emissions and building community resilience.

In the interest of broadening the reach of groundbreaking scholarship, the PCG Lab has published primers to help readers easily and quickly digest the key publication concepts.
