Professor Michael Newton to Testify in ICJ Hearings on The Gambia v. Myanmar

Professor Michael Newton, Director of the International Legal Studies Program and International Law Practice Lab at Vanderbilt Law, will testify in public hearings concerning The Gambia v. Myanmar at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague.

Filed by West African nation The Gambia in 2019, the case accuses Myanmar authorities of violating the 1948 Geneva Convention during 2017 actions against the country’s minority Rohingya population in the Rakhine State. The hearings are the first in a genocide case in more than a decade at the ICJ.

Professor Newton is an expert on terrorism, accountability, transnational justice and conduct of hostilities issues. He has previously served as an expert witness in terrorism trials at the ICJ and in domestic courts.

His testimony will be broadcast on UN Web TV on January 22.
