The Vanderbilt Social Justice Reporter (“VSJR”) is excited to announce its inaugural symposium – “Capitalism & The Carceral State,” which will take place on Thursday, March 21, at Vanderbilt Law School.
The day-long event brings together academics, system-impacted individuals, and leaders from organizations such as the Civil Rights Corps, JustLeadershipUSA, Choosing Justice Initiative, and the Oregon Governor’s office to discuss how the relationship between capitalism and the carceral state shapes the lives of individuals and affects inequality across communities. Andrea Armstrong, a 2023 MacArthur Foundation Fellow and the Dr. Norman C. Francis Distinguished Professor of Law at Loyola New Orleans College of Law, will deliver the keynote lecture, “Carceral Secrets and Truths.”
“This symposium bridges the gap between legal theory and practical impact by highlighting speakers who will provide a timely, holistic analysis of the carceral system’s evolving landscape,” said Anna Coplon ’24, Symposium Editor. “VSJR is thrilled to welcome these esteemed leaders to Vanderbilt Law and will continue to provide forums where traditional scholarship meets real-world relevance.”
“Capitalism & The Carceral State” will be held in Flynn Auditorium from 9:00am – 5:30pm CDT. The event is open to the public, and CLE credit is available with costs covered for attendees. Registration is required. Visit the event webpage to learn more and register.
A digital-only publication, the Vanderbilt Social Justice Reporter strives to publish traditional and nontraditional legal scholarship on intersectional issues of law and social equity and to be a national go-to resource for social justice-oriented scholars, practitioners, students and community members.
