The Asian Pacific American Student Association and the George Barrett Social Justice Program are co-sponsoring a viewing of the oral arguments for SFFA v. Harvard and SFFA v. UNC, two Title IV cases recently heard by the Supreme Court. on Tuesday, Nov. 1, at 3:30 p.m. in the Moore Room. Education policy expert Matthew Shaw will provide an introduction.
Both schools are accused of discriminating against Asians and Asian-Americans in their admissions policies:
- Harvard maintained a “soft quota” that discriminated against AAPI applicants who, on balance, had higher GPA and test scores than its white applicants, yet were admitted at a lower rate than these white applicants based on lower “personal scores.”
- UNC actively recruited first-generation and lower-income students to diversify their student body, yet it hurt their AAPI recruitment. These two cases are Title VI cases and concern facially neutral classification with a discriminatory impact and/or intent.
