A Solid Foundation

The Law & Business curriculum offers students interested in a career in corporate law a solid foundation into how businesses work, including an introduction to basic finance and accounting principles for students who lack an undergraduate business or accounting degree.

  • How to Earn the Certificate

    To earn the Law and Business Certificate students must meet the following:

    1. File a Law & Business Intent to Enroll form;
    2. Pass ALL of the following required courses:
      1. Introduction to Corporate Finance and Accounting for Lawyers
      2. Corporations or Corporations and Business Entities
      3. Securities Regulation;
    3. Pass ONE of the following courses:
      1. Federal Tax Law
      2. Bankruptcy
      3. Mergers and Acquisitions (Law 8138, 8055 and 8056 all fulfill this possible path)
    4. Earn nine additional credits in program-approved courses. (Marked by an asterisk in the course scheduler.)
  • Waiver for Introduction to Corporate Finance and Accounting for Lawyers

    Introduction to Corporate Finance and Accounting for Lawyers is required unless a student obtains an approved waiver from the Director of Academic Operations. A waiver will be granted if the student:

    1. is currently pursuing either a J.D. /MBA. or a J.D./M.S.F.;
    2. has earned an MBA or MSF; or
    3. has earned a grade of B or better in college-level accounting and finance courses, excluding personal finance, public finance, or international finance courses.

    If a student would be eligible for a waiver or has earned a grade of B or better in a college-level finance course, and elects to take this course, the student will be required to take the course on a pass/fail basis. If a student has earned a grade of B or better in college-level Accounting but not taken Finance, they would not be eligible for a waiver and would need to take Introduction to Corporate Finance and Accounting for Lawyers on the fully-graded basis.
